This optical dust sensor can measure the air quality very accurately by measuring air particles or dust based on laser detection. This sensor is supplied with the accompanying cable and USB to serial converter to connect the sensor to a computer if needed. We also sell a cable separately to easily connect the sensor to, for example, a microcontroller: JST-XH Female to DuPont Female Compatible Cable - 7p - 15cm

Specifications:

  • Voltage: 4.7 - 5.3V DC (5V DC with <20mV ripple advised)
  • Power consumption: 70mA ±10mA (in operation), <4mA (laser and fan sleep mode)
  • Measuring range: 0.0-999.9 μg/m3
  • PM2.5 and PM10 output
  • Lifetime laser diode: up to 8000 hours (with continuous operation*)

* For example, measure every 30 seconds or every 5 minutes to extend the life span.

Pinout of the connector:

Pin Name Description
1 NC Not connected
2 1μm PM2.5: 0-999μg/m3, PWM Output
3 5V 5V DC Input
4 2.5μm PM10: 0-999 μg/m3, PWM Output
5 GND Ground/min
6 RXD RX UART data (3.3V)
7 TXD TX UART data (3.3V)

For more information see the datasheet and UART protocol under the tab "Downloads".

The drivers for the USB serial converter can be found here:

Note: users report that the driver for Mac can be unstable on both old and new computers, read this extra link to get it working.

For examples of this sensor in combination with an Arduino see: Using SDS011 Dust Sensor and Instructies voor het samenbouwen van een eigen fijnstof sensor
The RIVM tested this sensor and is being used for air quality measurements: Sensoren voor fijn stof (PM2,5/PM10)

Product FAQ

This is not possible in most cases. Most development boards (including Uno, Mega, NodeMCU, D1 Mini V3, etc.) have a diode between the 5V pin and the USB input that lowers the voltage. If the voltage from the 5V pin is lower than the required minimum of the device (see specifications) then it cannot function properly. In addition, many development boards can only provide little power. This can also cause it to malfunction. Using an insufficient power supply can even damage the device. Therefore, make sure that you use a suitable power supply and that it is connected correctly. It is advised to verify the supply voltage by measuring it.

In most cases, this is caused by insufficient power supply condition. When the power supply provides too little current, has too low a voltage and/or generates too much ripple, several problems can arise, such as:

  • Unstable measurements;
  • Communication error between development board and sensor;
  • A sensor that doesn't work at all;
  • Damage to the sensor.

A good quality power supply is required that can supply enough current and has the correct voltage (see sensor specifications in the product description). It is advised to measure the voltage directly on the Vcc and GND pins of the sensor.
